According to WHO, a total of 4,493 people have died (so far) from the world's worst Ebola outbreak on record. This is the highest so far in the history of the virus. That may be very serious but what is overwhelmingly serious is that about half of that figure are cases only in Liberia.
What?? So I begun to ask myself why that should be the case. Just as I was probing, something came up: the health workers in Liberia warn the government of an intended strike action on Tuesday, 14th October, 2014 because they say government is not paying them some wage or allowance as promised. Now that rather got me wild.
"So what is Ebola going to be like in Liberia when the health workers are strike?", I asked. Even when they were active and working, the virus was fast spreading lest to talk of when they're gone.
So it is Thursday, today, and are the health workers on strike? NO! Wow, thank God. Have their wages and allowances being paid? NO! Wow, then I guess Liberian health workers are really patriotic.
Then a little bird whispered to my ear why the workers are not on strike. Interestingly, the reason is probably the same as why the spread of Ebola virus in Liberia is increasing daily.
According to the little bird, some health workers in Liberia (especially those working closely with dead bodies) are alleged to be taking bribes from families, friends and sympathizers of people suspected to have died from the Ebola virus.
That is to say, such people or families secretly pay monies (between US$100 to US$150) to the health workers so that they can pronounce the death of their beloved ones as not due to Ebola. This, they do to be able to properly bury their dead and organize funeral ceremonies for them because one people realize the person died of Ebola, of course no one would want to get closer to their bodies lest to talk of organizing burials.
This, according to the little bird, is what has been happening for quite some months now. Tha also means everyone who unknowingly get involved with the corpse of such people is definitely not going back home with only tears (from mourning) but also a trace of the Ebola virus in their body.
So, whether this is true or not (and I must say it definitely may be the truth), there is only one question on my mind as an African: what is wrong with the African man so much that he'd want to take bribe for almost everything?
